Companies are providing or consuming APIs to open up their systems to others or to easily connect to external supplier, cloud, or customer systems. To quote an IT manager, "Everything is connected to everything." We live in a massively integrated technology world, and with the burgeoning Internet of Things (IoT) growing every day, the number of integrations will continue to exponentially increase as time goes on.

Often APIs are the mechanism connecting diverse applications hosted at diverse locations. Your company may be creating and hosting (providing) APIs or simply consuming those of other organizations. Regardless, it's highly likely that your use of APIs has accelerated over the past 12 months and that it will continue to do so during the next 12 months.
