John L. Myers, Managing Research Director, Business Intelligence and Data WarehousingThe Allure of Information Fueling Competitive Advantage: Data-driven Strategies Motivating Big Data Implementations

by John L. Myers, Managing Research Director, Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing

Some might ask, what exactly is driving big data strategies and implementations? After all, the incentive to implement the various projects associated with a big data initiative is not a trivial matter for organizations. There is the vision for an internal champion to identify, and sometimes cajole, internal stakeholders to support big data efforts, which can be a difficult. The inclusion of fine-grained event data and multi-structured datasets can create uncertainty with teams that built their expertise and careers on more traditional data sources. There is also the issue of getting those internal stakeholders to approve, or in certain cases directly provide, funding for a big data initiative. While big data can be a less expensive option to traditional data management strategies and implementations, there are implementation and operation concerns with the next generation's data management platforms for teams not familiar with Hadoop and NoSQL. Finally, the selection of the projects that make the most sense to implement with the inclusion of, or the augmentation of, big data sources can be a difficult choice for organizations who have stayed mainly within the "box" of traditional structured data sources. However, the question still remains: with these hurdles to the sponsorship, architecture, and implementation of a big data initiative...

What is the driving force behind the growth of big data implementations?

Networking teams with the smallest toolsets spend the least time on reactive troubleshooting and the most time on other projects.

EMA Zenoss blogLinux on Power—Poised for Greatness

The droves of businesses expected to flock to Linux on Power have not, to date, actually materialized. While sales of Power Systems have somewhat increased, the uptick in adoption cannot be attributed to Linux availability since relatively few implementations are known to have actually been deployed with it. According to survey-based research recently published by HelpSystems, only 6.4 percent of businesses that have IBM Power servers are actually running Linux on them and only 6.1 percent are considering running Linux. There are two principle reasons the expected flood of adoption has turned into a trickle.

Network Monitoring and Advanced Analytics

EMA Zenoss blogEMA study shows that network pros are applying analytics to network data for security and other purposes.

Almost all network monitoring products deliver value to network operations in the same way: They collect data from the network, analyze it, and present actionable information to the network manager. In the process of collecting and analyzing network data, network monitoring vendors create metadata. This process is usually proprietary. These vendors make money by being able to produce this metadata quickly and at scale, with maximum insight into network activity.
