by Shamus McGillicuddy, Senior Analyst, Network Management

The wide-area network (WAN) is essential to any enterprise or organization that conducts business in multiple locations. It connects remote sites and remote users to access data and networked applications. It enables collaboration and communication. It facilitates business transactions.

In recent years, Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) has observed significant changes in how enterprises are planning, implementing and operating their WANs. This month EMA will publish Next-Generation Wide-Area Networking, a research study that explores these changes in depth.

Based on a survey of 200 IT professionals who are directly involved in WAN planning, engineering, and operations, this research quantitatively examines several key trends, such as software-defined WAN adoption rates and drivers, the migration from private, managed services WAN connections like MPLS to public internet connectivity, and network functions virtualization (NFV) in remote sites. The research also examines how public cloud adoption is transforming WAN architecture.

DNA is different because underneath all the slideware and demos is an apparent commitment to changing the way enterprises do networking. In other words, Cisco wants network engineers to rely less on their skills with its command line interface (CLI).

There is no greater investment we can make in the future than to prepare our children to successfully navigate the challenges of tomorrow. Of course, predicting the workforce requirements of the future is a bit like trying to capture a fly with a cargo net—just when you think you have it, it slips through the holes and buzzes in a different direction. Nonetheless, it's safe to assume that workforce mobility will be an essential aspect of the coming generation's career experiences.
