SOA, Performance, and XML Gateways

by Julie Craig, EMA Senior Analyst

2007 is the year that Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) goes mainstream. EMA's 2006 SOA research confirmed that multiple companies are already demonstrating SOA's considerable business value, especially in industry verticals such as telecommunications and finance, where fierce competition demands an agility that is beyond the capabilities of traditional distributed application architectures. From the EMA perspective, SOA crested early adoption in 2006 and 2007 will see SOA hitting the mainstream.

And while the good news is that SOA-based applications are flexible, platform agnostic, and standards based, the bad news is that they can also bring significant performance hurdles.

Notable Quotes: EMA Analysts in the News
"... Sun with Solaris + AMP had taken the best parts of the LAMP stack, swapped out Linux with Solaris, and added other open-source technologies ... In terms of standing a chance against LAMP, absolutely, I think it's a very strong offering ... [but] it's going to be difficult just to get mind share over Linux."
- EMA's Andi Mann (InfoWorld - February 12, 2007)

"Most big companies have updated systems to address [the earlier onset of daylight-saving time] ... but many haven't done enough."
- EMA's Andi Mann (USA Today - February 9, 2007)

"[I]t remains to be seen how extensive any industry consolidation could be over the next few years. But it does seem unlikely that the security industry will see many large pure-play security vendors in the future."
- EMA's Scott Crawford (Computerworld - February 6, 2007)

"IT managers need a policy-based means to access all this configuration information to enable higher-level management of performance across network, server and applications ... The number one question asked when diagnosing a performance issue among enterprise IT managers is, 'What changed?' and with quick access to that data, IT managers can fix problems more quickly."
- EMA's Dennis Drogseth (CIO Today - January 30, 2007)
