Analyst's Corner
Why and How the Service Catalog Is the Right Starting Point for ITIL
Hank Marquis

by Hank Marquis,
Director of ITSM Consulting, EMA

IT Service Management (ITSM) is what ITIL is all about. Yet, ITIL offers precious little guidance on how to organize IT resources into IT services. ITIL makes service portfolio management its spine with a focus on the importance of a service catalog.

If you don’t know what you are doing, there is very little chance you will do it correctly or in a repeatable manner. Without having an agreed name to refer to service how can you support it or evaluate its performance? In short, without defining your services you cannot practice ITSM, and since ITIL is simply best practice in ITSM, you cannot “do ITIL” without defining your services.
