The Changing Nature of Network Security: Expanded Capability or Better Performance? Why Not Both?

In the last few years, the security landscape has undergone enormous changes. The sheer number of threats and reported vulnerabilities has mushroomed, as the malicious recognize the wealth of opportunity in IT. A growing awareness of skilled adversaries, the evolution of "custom" malware designed for a single purpose, and efforts of attackers to evade defense by crafting numerous variants of existing attacks have all contributed to this explosion. Applications have become a primary target as more and more functionality shifts to the technologies of the Web. Last year, for the first time, vulnerabilities in Web applications exceeded all other types of vulnerabilities disclosed, according to IBM's X-Force security research organization.

These trends have both added to the existing challenge and created new problems for enterprise security.
