Bill Nye, President Lincoln’s favorite humorist, once said “Wagner’s music is better than it sounds.” Nye meant it as a clever putdown of music that, to many American ears, seemed to be overbearing and complex, but which nonetheless was creating a lot of media attention as being revolutionary – the “new wave.”
