The CMDB is Dead, Long Live the CMDB!
by Hank Marquis, Director of IT Service Management Consulting, EMA

In early June 2007, the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) announced the availability of an update to its IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) collection of best practices for managing IT services. While most of the core process and workflow activities from ITIL V2 remain intact in ITIL V3, there are significant changes to core descriptions. Chief among these changes include more detailed and evolved guidance surrounding Configuration Management.

Some of the ITIL V3 updates include the:

* Expansion of the Configuration Management process

* Redefinition of the CMDB concept

* Creation of several new processes to manage the new knowledge management activities and components
