The Blackhat/Defcon Experience: A Valuable Lesson in Security

For those of you not familiar with Blackhat USA or the Defcon Hacking Conference, I will merely describe them as premiere annual security conferences. In previous years, many IT security practitioners and incident response team members (including yours truly) dreaded the week of Blackhat and Defcon. For some reason, it seemed as though each year’s nastiest malware outbreaks occurred either during or immediately following Blackhat USA and Defcon. Times have changed since those days. Today, the malicious hacker community is now much less focused on vanity and more focused on profit. As a result, the attacks against businesses have become more covert, more sophisticated, and far more lethal. It is for these reasons that the lessons learned at Blackhat and Defcon have become all the more important.
