The service desk is at the strategic center for many service management initiatives and will remain so for the foreseeable future. As EMA has written, the service desk has become the “nucleus” for service management activities that reach out to most ITSM domains, including asset management, Configuration Management Systems (CMS), change management, knowledge management and the service catalog. It is also a bridge to operations, as service support demands detailed operational information from both technology-silo management systems and business applications – all varying by vertical market and the user constituency being supported.
To be sure, this expansive set of responsibilities is putting increasing pressures on the service support team. While it is true that the maturity curve for IT has advanced tremendously, supporting the operational model can be handled using some basic and very well-established technologies.
