Overcoming Fear and Loathing in CMDB Land – Don’t be Fooled by Industry FUD

by Dennis Drogseth, Vice President, EMA

With the New Year coming around, it’s time to make some resolutions for 2008. In this set of excerpts from my December advisory note, I’m recommending that one of them be: Don’t let industry FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) get you down when it comes to planning your CMDB initiatives.

The notion of the CMDB was born out of the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL), and a more systemic approach has arisen from ITIL v3 introduced in May 2007. From an ITIL v3 perspective, CMDB systems provide a common and consistent source of “truth” to enable more collaborative and effective processes in support of lifecycle service management. As a total system, this truth can span inventory and asset information, configuration and change information, customer and business impact information, and even real-time state-related information relevant to incident and problem management.
