Avoiding the Challenges of “Swivel Chair” Management
Business adoption of mobile devices has grown exponentially in recent years. BlackBerry devices have
particularly seen an explosion of new deployments. RIM has reported over 32 million subscribers and
growing.
As companies have grown more reliant on mobile devices to support their expanding business requirements,
IT support organizations have experienced an expansion of responsibilities for managing the backend
communications and support systems. Mobile devices access and rely on a wide variety of disparate IT
resources across the IT infrastructure to provide their services. The more elements involved in the delivery of
a service, the greater the complexity inherent in resolving problems. For example, if there is a problem with
email delivery to a BlackBerry mobile device from a Microsoft Exchange Server, the problem could be with
the Exchange application, the Windows Server operating system it is running on, an Active Directory server,
a networking service, or a storage device. Regardless of the root cause, the failure could impact the availability

Enterprise, a holistic management solution designed to centralize all critical
components of BlackBerry administration onto a single console. The
interface allows administrators to manage support resources including the
RIM BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) software, mail servers, databases,
Microsoft Active Directory and server operating systems, such as
Windows Server. The goal of the solution is to provide an end-to-end view
of enterprise applications running on the BlackBerry platform in order to
simplify administration and improve operational effectiveness.
With a unified console for all relevant components necessary to manage an
enterprise BlackBerry support infrastructure, a holistic view of the
environment is enabled to facilitate prompt problem identification and
resolution. HP expects this solution will significantly reduce the costs
associated with managing multiple disparate monitoring packages and will
enable enterprises to optimize performance and service levels for BlackBerry
messaging business requirements. The HP Operations Manager for
BlackBerry Enterprise software became generally available in August, 2009.
