Why OpTier’s Business Events Module Opens
the Door for Dramatic New Levels of Innovation
Abstract
This ENTERPRISE MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATES® (EMA™) impact analysis addresses OpTier’s
new Business Events Module introduced in Q3, 2010. The module, based on an OEM of Sybase’s Aleri,
but integrated and optimized for OpTier’s solutions in Business Transaction Management (BTM), pro-
vides an innovative departure point for OpTier and its customers, and heralds significant shifts in the
industry as a whole. The module leverages Complex Event Processing (CEP), typically associated with
business process and business activity management, to correlate events across both IT and business
sources as they impact very tangible, relevant and often multi-dimensional business outcomes.

On July 27th, 2010, OpTier introduced its Business Events Module based on an OEM of Sybase’s
Aleri for Complex Event Processing (CEP). The new module is available as an optional extension
of OpTier’s core portfolio for Business Transaction Management (BTM), including CoreFirst and
Experience Manager, and is already fully integrated into CoreFirst’s broader capabilities for service-
centric transaction monitoring, dependency mapping, business impact analysis, and automation.
OpTier has a growing number of customers in mid-tier and larger enterprises across a wide range of
verticals. CoreFirst and Experience Manager have delivered very strong value for customers seeking
to monitor complex applications – including those where interdependencies across applications and
infrastructure require ongoing, dynamic insights.
The new Business Events Module, which can process hundreds of thou-
sands of events per second, should add considerably to OpTier’s capa-
bilities over time by providing insights into a wide variety of business
outcomes associated with the delivery of IT applications. These out-
comes can be monitored for impacts related to application performance
or, conversely, informed upon through CEP analytics even when the
problem set is independent of application performance. For instance, a
delay in processing a parcel in a warehouse may alert a supervisor that
the slowdown is likely the result of a staffing issue, just as easily as it

might inform on poor server performance.
The new Business Events Module is also significant in that it can not only assimilate data sets provided
directly through CoreFirst and Experience Manager, but can also assimilate outside events from both
business and IT sources. This is OpTier’s first capability to assimilate data that it doesn’t monitor
directly, and as such positions the company to grow significantly both in terms of its ability to analyze
business outcomes, but also in its ability to become an effective analytic overlay for IT events from
multiple monitoring sources. The fact that OpTier’s initial focus for the module is targeted heavily at
business outcomes already separates it from most competitors and underscores its commitment to
deliver true business impact beyond more traditional event correlation.
