IBM Announces Tivoli Service Automation Manager, a Data Center Automation Solution for Internal Cloud Computing
Abstract: On December 16, 2008, IBM announced the January 2009 release of Tivoli Service Automation Manager V7.1, a new solution for automating request, delivery, and management of data center infrastructure. Tivoli Service Automation Manager is aimed at enabling sophisticated management of so-called ‘cloud computing’ services – a poorly defined and frequently abused term that combines virtualization, grid and cluster computing, managed services, outsourcing, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), and more into a single, marketing-oriented buzzword. With elements of self-service, IT process automation (ITPA), Data Center Automation (DCA), provisioning and configuration management, virtual systems management (VSM), and lifecycle management disciplines, Tivoli Service Automation Manager provides some essential management capabilities that cloud computing initiatives desperately need. It adds competitive pressure to virtual systems management (VSM) and virtualization lifecycle management vendors like Embotics and DynamicOps; specialist IT Process Automation (ITPA) vendors like Novell and Opalis; and broad lifecycle management vendors like BMC, CA, and HP; by extending these capabilities specifically into the cloud computing paradigm. As an entry point to cloud service management, ENTERPRISE MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATES® (EMA™) analysts believe that Tivoli Service Automation Manager provides a significant feature set that will provide very defined IT and business advantages, and sets the stage for much more extensive management of cloud computing. |
