Advisory Note: Custom Applications: A Horse of a Different Color Research Summary

Abstract: EMA research confirms that there are significant differences in the ways custom and packaged applications are managed in today’s enterprises. These differences drive requirements for specialized tools focusing on custom applications which are, in fact, "a different animal" in multiple ways. This paper draws on EMA survey data to identify the challenges these often complex applications bring to the table, and outlines ways these challenges can be mitigated. It explores the following key questions: * What kinds of applications are most common and why? * How do support practices differ between custom and packaged applications? * What kinds of tools can help reduce the costs and risks associated with developing and supporting custom applications? * What are some specific examples of such toolsets, and how can they help? |
