Two acquisitions by Blue Coat Systems, Inc., during the month of May are newsworthy and interesting by themselves, but also point to new directions for the company, and perhaps for the industry. On May 9, 2013 Blue Coat, a market leader in Web security and WAN optimization, announced that it had acquired the SSL Inspector appliance product line from Netronome, a leader in flow processing. Then, more momentously, on May 22, 2013 the company announced that it had entered into an agreement to acquire Solera Networks, a well-known provider of security intelligence and analytics -- a much different area of the market. The growing combination of capabilities under the Blue Coat umbrella, including Netronome, have been cumulatively impressive. However those provided by Solera, signal a profound shift in direction toward what the company calls Business Assurance Technology, and may also hint at broader trends in the security market.
