Abstract:
In November 2008, CA – a leading provider of enterprise IT management software – acquired IT Process Automation (ITPA) software vendor, Optinuity. ITPA is an important data center automation (DCA) discipline that automates and integrates the workflow of complex, multi-discipline IT management processes. It can replace many manual, resource-intensive, and error-prone activities that typically cross multiple IT components, disciplines, and/or departments.

As a result, ITPA has a very high potential for Return On Investment (ROI), with research by ENTERPRISE MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATES™ (EMA®) showing it frees up staff for strategic projects, increases system availability, and saves on average $500,000 more per year on staff costs alone, compared to sites without ITPA

EMA believes that this important acquisition changes the market for CA. It will have a significant but mixed impact on competitors – especially ITPA providers like Opalis, BMC Software, Hewlett-Packard (HP), and NetIQ, but also competitors without strong ITPA solutions like IBM, Quest, and others. For Optinuity customers the advantages will start immediately. For existing CA customers, this will make them choose between existing CA IT Process Manager (ITPM) and a future product. For future customers, this acquisition will undoubtedly provide a strong option in the long run. However, EMA believes that CA has a lot of work to do before it will be truly competitive in this market.

This EMA Impact Brief explores all of these areas and more in more detail.
