Abstract: On May 19, 2010, Symantec announced its intention to acquire VeriSign’s security business for approximately $1.28 billion in cash. Many have seen this acquisition as a highly-priced deal that gives Symantec VeriSign’s SSL certificate business (85% of the business acquired) and wonder how this relates to Symantec’s core strategy. In fact, it’s the remaining 15% that may be even more strategic to Symantec, given VeriSign’s long-established credibility in identity-linked encryption and strong authentication, and its offering of these capabilities as services. Why are these assets so important to Symantec? How will it shape Symantec’s strategy going forward, and what will be the impact for Symantec’s allies and competitors? With hands-on experience in the technologies at the center of this deal—security management, identity and public key cryptography—EMA Managing Research Director Scott Crawford offers his perspectives on the strategic aspects of this deal which may be lost on some but not on Symantec.
