Abstract:
Many IT organizations face a seemingly intractable problem: how to decrease data center power requirements and increase data center capacity to delay costly additional data center build-outs and reduce overall carbon footprint? Data center management technologies that push policy-based automation all the way down to elements such as servers is a key enabler toward these goals. Self-managing, autonomous hardware that can be provisioned from bare metal in minutes, dynamically moving workloads to optimize utilization and adhere to policies also results in much lower power usage. This white paper describes Cisco’s Unified Computing System (UCS) from an automation and power savings perspective, including a quantitative comparison of UCS and HP blade servers.
