Study finds 80 percent willing to invest in data reduction solutions within next 12 months
BOULDER, Colo., Feb. 10, 2009 – Enterprise Management Associates (EMA), a leading IT management research and consulting firm, today announced the release of its latest research paper titled, “Purchasing Decisions for 2009: Data Deduplication.” Based on a survey of 159 storage decision makers from companies with more than 50 Terabytes of managed storage, this report examines enterprise purchasing priorities for data deduplication technologies and provides go-to-market guidance for storage vendors.
While the study found that 80 percent of those surveyed expressed a willingness to invest in data reduction solutions within the next 12 months, EMA also uncovered a number of market perceptions that may slow enterprise adoption of these technologies.
“Our research indicates that IT managers are particularly worried about scale-out issues (an area where deduplication has the potential to shine). However, respondents also expressed concern that data deduplication technologies may add complexity, increase costs and result in lost or corrupted data,” said Curtis Breville, EMA senior analyst, storage management. “Vendors must be prepared to address these concerns in order to capitalize on the market opportunity for these technologies.”
Additional key findings include:
* More than half of survey respondents believe that adding deduplication to their data centers will complicate data center management.
* Data appears to be growing at a substantially slower pace than the 25 percent per quarter rate that storage vendors have told data centers to expect.
* Respondents look to get value by deduplicating their primary data. They perceive deduplicating backup and archival data as providing less value.
* Enterprises view database deduplication as the “low hanging fruit” when it comes to getting value from deduplication.
Breville will conduct a free 30-minute Webinar on February 12 to review study highlights. Register at: http://www.www.enterprisemanagement.com/research/asset.php?id=1099
