New EMA research provides valuable insights into how IT asset management, IT financial planning and capacity optimization are changing and why

BOULDER, Colo., March 1, 2011 – Enterprise Management Associates (EMA), a leading IT and data management research and consulting firm, has released its latest research report entitled, “Service-Centric Asset Management in the Age of Cloud Computing.”  The notion behind aligning IT assets (both capital and operational expenses) with IT services and the business values they deliver isn’t new.  It has existed for decades in the telecommunications industry and is strongly reinforced by ITIL’s v3’s notion of an integrated lifecycle approach for both assets and services.  This notion, however, flies in the face of the traditional fragmentation that’s governed IT asset management in past decades.

This new research provides valuable insights into how asset management is changing and why – in particular, how new technologies, like cloud computing, and new organizational models focused on more cross-domain workflows, are beginning to transform not only asset management but also the very lifeblood of IT.

“Service-centric Asset Management is part of a large move towards cross-domain services organizations that are advancing not only the efficiencies but the very role of IT,” said Dennis Drogseth, VP of Research at EMA.  “Macro-economic factors escalating the value of IT services as business transformers are catalysts for this, along with other, more technical catalysts, such as cloud computing.  EMA sees a clear we/them divide between more service-centric approaches to asset and financial optimization and more siloed and fragmented IT cultures.”

Based on data collected in December 2010 from a respondent base of 80 recipients from companies with more than 250 employees, the report addresses:

>>Organizational Dynamics:  EMA is tracing the growth of organizational models that support the integration of asset and service management with an eye to past, present and future.

>>Strategic issues and priorities:  Where does IT view asset management as strategic today and why?   How do these priorities help to set the stage, or not, for a truly service-centric asset management model?  These issues include Green IT and the growing role of asset management to support financial optimization across the broader enterprise.

>>Technology adoption patterns and priorities:  How and where are technologies being adopted to support the growth and integration of service-centric asset management?

>>Impacts of cloud computing on asset management:  How are cloud technologies in particular stimulating the move to service-centric asset management?  Where is the process most accelerated today and why?  Where is it going in the future?

“The role of cloud computing in accelerating service-centric asset management is perhaps counter-intuitive,” continued Drogseth.  “Cloud would seem to be an argument for looser, less central control of IT assets, when in reality it’s just the opposite—and the data is very clear on this.  Just as cloud offers many new options and can deliver many values, it provides far and away the most effective results for IT organizations who have the best handle on their assets, how they impact services, and what their interdependencies are from both a process and business perspective.”
