Meta’s $17B teen safety settlement is being covered as a privacy win. EMA’s Chris Steffen argues it’s really a security story.
Two problems buried in the fine print:
- Verification — Protecting minors first requires identifying them. Meta’s AgeKey framework applies smart zero-trust principles, but someone still has to collect facial scans and IDs to make it work.
- Audit trail — Proving compliance means retaining more identity-linked data on minors for longer — the opposite of good data minimization.
And it may not stay Meta’s problem: 30% of the settlement is tied to TikTok and YouTube adopting similar measures, positioning Meta’s tech as an industry standard.
Chris’s take: this is a security and data-governance problem wearing a child-safety headline.
