A lot has changed since Enterprise Management Associates' last Return on Investment study was published in August of 2009. At that time, the entire IT industry was in the midst of "the downturn," which turned out to be a pallid euphemism for the worst economic environment since the great depression. Budgets, at best, were "unchanged," and most were trending downward.  IT professionals were losing their jobs as companies retrenched in an effort to weather the storm, as nobody knew for certain how long the bleak economic climate would last.

In 2011, although times are still uncertain, they are far from what they were 1 1/2 years ago. For most companies, budgets are on the rise. Software as a Service (SaaS)-based products are competing with on-premise products in a big way. Cloud Computing has taken off and Public Cloud is finally making inroads in the enterprise, where Private Cloud is still king.

One thing that has not changed is that everybody still seems to love a good success story. ROI is still relevant, and this year, like 2009, has its share of excellent stories.

Another thing that hasn't changed is that, although we hear a lot about ROI, it is still difficult to actually quantify. Nearly every IT organization has a general grasp of which tools are valuable and which ones can just as well stay on the shelf. Very few, however, can cite hard numbers about the value proposition of a specific product. This makes true ROI stories hard to find and, when they ARE found, difficult to quantify. ROI research is also complicated by the fact that few companies can be publically identified in case studies without jumping through significant legal hoops. As a result, "hard" ROI stories tend to be few and far between.

This report updates much of the information from the earlier report and features three new case studies.
